Buying of Alaska
While the British owned most of Canada, Alsaka belonged to Russia in the late 19th century. Russia, having serious financial issues, did not want this land to go to the British; therefore, they agreed to sell Alaska to America. In 1867, Alaska was bought by the United Sates for $7.2 million. However, the debate in Congress was a long one, discussing how America could be more vulnerable to attack. Additioanlly, Congress was still preoccupied with the Civil War and the split nation.

The Spanish American War
The United States, in the imperilistic age, wanted more resources, land, and power. In 1898, the US had their opportunity to gain more land from the Spanish. The causes of the Spanish American War include:

United States wanted more land
Roosevlt, not yet president, was a large proponent of entering war. He had a great influence over the United States involvement in the war and his imperilistic ideals carry into his presidency.
