My History

Ohio and Pennsylvania are my home states. While I was born in PA, I went to high school near Cleveland and grew up in a New England-like town with a rich history. Realizing my love for history, I attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where I earned a BA in History and a minor in Art History. Continuiung my education at UMass, I earned a Masters in Education. Throughout my schooling, I learned that history is a gift that keeps giving. There is always more to learn and more mysteries to solve. I am a dedicated learner when it comes to history, and I believe it is important for students not only to learn about our past but to learn how to think critically about it.

As a teacher, I strive to create a classroom in which students are engaged. Working with primary and secondary sources is an extrememly important part of a historian's job, so students should learn how to anazlyze and compare documents. Through document work, students are encouraged to think critically and ask questions.

Why History?

Learning history is essential to understanding cultures, understanding one's role as a citizen, and understanding one's own identity, both personally and as part of a society. Additionally, history is about learning how to read well, write adequately, and analyze situations.  Looking upon stories of the past, we are able to contemplate the causes and effects of decisions of  other people. We are able to understand how our country has become what it is today. The past is an important part of living in the present and planning for the future.

To understand more on why learning history is important, read "Why Study History? (1998)" by Peter N. Stearns:
