The Enflield was used by both Northern and Southern soldiers in the Civil War. Compared to gus used in the American Revolution, the Enflield had a better range and accuracy.

Minie Ball

This new bullet used during the Civil War shot farther and spun as it shot, causing large wounds. If the bullet wound was in the chest, there was little chance of survival. If the bullet hit a limb, the arm or leg would often be amputated.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

The Kansas - Nebraska Act was meant to help settle the the land in the middle of the country. However, due to its popular sovereignty, the Act may have created more conflict. Visit this MAP to see the decisions made by this act.

Dred-Scott Case

In 1847, Dred Scott sued for his freedom. Over a course of ten years, the case was debated. Finally, they ruled Scott and other blacks were not citizens and therefore could not sue for rights. To read more about the case, visit PBS: Dred Scott.

Soldier Accounts

Soldiers in the Civil War had many experiences, good and bad. To learn more about their experiences, you can read Civil War diaries. 

 

Elijah Hunt Rhodes was a Union Soldier writing in 1862, towards the beginning of the war. (Click his name to read his diary entries)

 

Louis Leon, a Confederate soldier, joined the war as a young man and kept a diary during his time. He later published the diary. The image to the right is Leon many years after the war. (Click his name for the transcript of his diary)
